George Washington Engraving by H. B. Hall, after William Birch
By William Birch
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a handsome engraved portrait of George Washington by artist H. B. Hall. This engraving was published in New York, in a limited edition of 125 impressions. The engraving is based on a painting by William Birch Gilbert Stuart, a small miniature in enamel, completed in 1796. Birch painted Washington from life in his office in Philadelphia, by the request of I. G. Van Staphorst, Esqr. of Amsterdam. In the small portrait, Washington is depicted in a head and shoulders pose, facing right. He wears a dark coat and vest and a white shirt and ruffled cravat. The father of our country, George Washington was the commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) and served two terms as the first United States president...

"Four at the Table", 1940s American Scene Lithograph by Woman Artist
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most intriguing and mysterious WPA-era prints we have ever offered, this rare, possibly unique work depicts a group of two women and two men in intense conversation at a crude wood table, in a simple room with cracks in the plaster that show the wood lath underneath. The four almost seem like a group on the lam in a film noir from the period, desperately running from a crime of some kind. Two of the four face downward, deeply focused on the subject at hand, and another is lost in thought, a pipe in his mouth. The fourth is most mysterious of all, facing away from the viewer. but clearly animated and in conversation. The artist was Alice Harold Murphy...

Josef Albers from White Embossings on Gray Series, Print II
By Josef Albers
Located in Brooklyn, NY
“In order to use colour effectively it is necessary to recognise that colour deceives continually.” Josef Albers “We never really perceive what colour really is, as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art.” Josef Albers “The structures are irrational statements which illustrate the artist’s claim that the eye seeks, in endless exploration, to fathom and master the contradictions of reversed symmetry. One begins to study the structure at some point where isometric order is suggested. One finds evidence for the reading of the work, but when one tries to take in the whole structure as a unit, new evidence requires a drastic reorganization of the work’s implications. That which was above shifts to below, that which was negative becomes positive, that which was full becomes vacant, that which was in front has moved to the rear. Having found a balance, the eye’s testing...
