'Oni' Big Color Lithograph 12/50 by Kumi Sugaï 1985
By Kumi Sugai
Located in Weesp, NL
Kumi Sugaï, one of the most internationally acclaimed Japanese painters of the twentieth century.
Rare 1985 color lithograph by Kumi Sugaï. This limited edition, 12/50, in excellent condition is titled 'Oni'. Oni can be read "Nami" which means wave but also Blue Devil. Oni translates in Japanese folklore as a type of demonic creature often of giant size, great strength, and fearful appearance. They are generally considered to be foreign in origin. Cruel and malicious, they can, nevertheless, be converted to Buddhism.
Kumi Sugaï (1919–1996): A Brief Biography
Kumi Sugaï was a Japanese-French artist known for his innovative approach to abstract art, blending elements of traditional Japanese calligraphy with modern abstraction. He was born on January 3, 1919, in Kobe, Japan, and began his artistic career in the 1930s.
In the 1950s, Sugaï moved to France, where he became associated with the art movement known as "Abstraction Lyrique...

Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Print Yosaku Feeling Ill, 1948
By Junichiro Sekino
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino.
This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner.
The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work.
Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including:
The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world.
Would be a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print...
