About the Item

This print is a colored engraving titled "VIEW in MILAN" and was published by Harrison & Co. on April 1, 1782. It is a picturesque scene depicting a tranquil landscape in Milan, Italy. The scene features several figures in 18th-century clothing gathered near a body of water. Some individuals appear to be engaging in daily activities such as washing and conversing. To the right, there is a prominent tree, and in the background, there is a bridge crossing the water, with more figures and a boat underneath. Architectural structures, including what appears to be a ruin of an old tower and a house with a red roof, can be seen amidst the natural landscape. The sky is rendered with a sense of an overcast or setting sun. The markings "Vernet del." and "Walker Sculp." on a print would signify the roles of two different artists in the creation of the piece. "Vernet del." indicates that an artist with the last name Vernet was the original drawer or designer of the image (del. is short for delineavit, which means "he/she drew it" in Latin). "Walker Sculp." means that someone with the last name Walker was the engraver (sculp. is short for sculpsit, which means "he/she engraved it"). Together, these inscriptions provide credit to the respective artists for their contributions to the print. The first name provided alongside "Vernet" would give a clearer indication of which artist from the Vernet family it might refer to, as there were several noted artists with that surname.

17th Century Gabriel Perelle "Landscape" Etching, France, circa 1660
By Gabriel Perelle
Located in Cagliari, IT
A French landscape by Gabriel Perelle. With a modern walnut frame Gabriel Perelle (Vernon, 1604 - Paris, 1677) was a French engraver, draftsman and printer of topographic views and landscapes. A pupil of Simon Vouet, Perelle specialized in landscapes with a classical setting, not unlike those of Francisque Millet, although with clearly decorative pretensions. He founded an etching lab, with the collaboration of his sons Nicolas and Adam. Perelle was also a pupil of Daniel Rabel and produced hundreds of engravings from his drawings, as well as compositions by fellow antagonists such as Israël Silvestre, Paul Bril, Jacques Callot, Michel Corneille the Elder, Jan Asselijn...
