About the Item

Ortolan Bunting – Antique Dutch Bird Print by Sepp & Nozeman, 1789 This finely hand-colored copper engraving, published in 1789, depicts the Emberiza hortulana, commonly known as the Ortolan Bunting. Created by Christiaan Sepp and Cornelis Nozeman, the print originates from the monumental Dutch ornithological work Nederlandsche Vogelen, the first comprehensive bird book of the Netherlands. This visually engaging composition features a male and female Ortolan Bunting perched among leafy branches beside a well-rendered nest containing speckled eggs — a rare inclusion of nesting behavior that adds both scientific and artistic value. The Ortolan Bunting is a small songbird once widespread across Europe and now protected due to population decline. Its subtle but rich plumage is well captured here: the male with a greenish-gray head and warm brown back, and the female shown with more subdued tones, reflecting natural sexual dimorphism. The delicate rendering of feathers, foliage, and eggs showcases the meticulous engraving and hand-coloring techniques typical of Sepp’s Amsterdam workshop, combining scientific accuracy with baroque elegance. This print is not only a beautiful decorative piece but also a historical artifact from a landmark 18th-century natural history publication. Nederlandsche Vogelen was published over nearly six decades (1770–1829), with each plate individually hand-colored shortly after printing. The resulting works are among the finest ornithological illustrations produced in Europe during the Enlightenment. Condition: Very good condition overall. Strong impression with original hand coloring. Slight age toning and a few faint spots in the margins, consistent with age. Plate mark clearly visible. No tears or repairs. Reverse is blank. Framing suggestion: We recommend a simple, natural wood or gold frame with a soft cream or pale green mat to complement the earthy tones of the bird and foliage. Museum glass will protect the delicate hand coloring and prevent fading over time. This print works well on its own or paired with other Sepp & Nozeman bird studies for a cohesive wall display.
