Pair of 19th Century Gothic Illuminated Ornament Prints Published in 1887

About the Item

Pair of 19th Century Gothic Illuminated Ornament Prints from Ornamentenschatz This exquisite pair of original 19th-century chromolithographs showcases the elegance and complexity of Gothic manuscript and mural decoration. Published in Stuttgart by the esteemed Verlag von Jul. Hoffmann as part of the monumental design reference *Ornamentenschatz* (The Treasury of Ornament), these plates capture the height of historicist fascination with medieval European art. The first plate (numbered 43) features Gothic manuscript illumination, displaying richly adorned initials, acanthus and foliate scrolls, stylized floral motifs, and a haloed angel set within an ornate historiated letter. The detailing reflects the meticulous work found in illuminated religious texts of the 12th to 15th centuries. It demonstrates not only the calligraphic traditions but also the symbolic and narrative elements that brought sacred manuscripts to life. The second plate (numbered 44) is dedicated to wall and ceiling painting (Wand- und Decken-Malerei) and includes geometric borders, vegetal patterns, and ecclesiastical figures. These designs were based on actual painted decorations preserved in Gothic churches and cloisters across Europe, interpreted and rendered with striking clarity for this influential series. Both plates were drawn by H. Dolmetsch, a notable figure in the German decorative arts revival, and reproduced in vivid, color-accurate lithography. They were intended as instructional models for architects, decorators, and craftsmen of the time, as well as collectors with a passion for historic ornament. Condition: The prints are in very good condition considering their age, with strong color retention and minimal edge wear. Slight toning of the paper is visible, consistent with 19th-century materials, but there are no tears or major defects. Framing Suggestions: These prints look particularly striking when framed side-by-side in matching gold or dark wood mouldings, with off-white or cream archival mats. To enhance their vivid medieval palette, museum glass or UV-protective acrylic is recommended. They are ideal for libraries, studies, or any interior with a classical, Gothic, or academic theme. This pair offers a rare opportunity to own authentic 19th-century design history—both decorative and pedagogic—rooted in the artistic traditions of Europe’s Gothic past.
