Partridges in Rural Landscape – Antique 19th Century Bird Chromolithograph

About the Item

Partridges in Rural Landscape – Antique 19th Century Bird Chromolithograph This charming 19th-century chromolithograph features a male and a juvenile Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix), or Rebhuhn, set against a gently sloping countryside with a village in the distance. The birds are shown in a naturalistic pose—alert and grounded among tufts of wild grass. The male is easily distinguished by his grey breast, russet flank markings, and the distinctive dark horseshoe-shaped belly patch, while the younger bird is illustrated in more muted tones, showing its developing plumage. The Grey Partridge is native to temperate regions of Europe and is often found in open farmland and grasslands. Known for its strong site fidelity and family groupings, this species was once a common sight across rural landscapes and remains an enduring symbol of the European countryside. The print demonstrates the refined detail and lifelike color possible with chromolithography, a technique developed in the 19th century that used multiple stones to layer colors and create highly accurate and attractive prints. The soft transitions in the sky, the texture of the grass, and the careful rendering of the birds' feathers show the care and precision that went into its production. Signed with the initials A.G., this plate is attributed to Anton Goering or a similar German illustrator active in natural history publishing during the late 1800s. It forms part of a larger ornithological series that sought to combine scientific documentation with decorative appeal, inspired by the tradition established by Johann Friedrich Naumann and other early pioneers of European bird study. This print makes a perfect addition to collections focused on game birds, antique zoological works, or pastoral European scenes. Condition: Very good condition with strong original color and crisp details. Minor foxing visible in the margins, but the image itself remains clean and unmarred. Paper is stable and well-preserved. Framing tips: Frame with a natural wood or walnut frame and use a warm cream or pale green mat to enhance the earthy tones. Ideal for country-style interiors or nature-themed displays. UV-protective glass is recommended.

19th-Century Chromolithograph of Bethlehem – Biblical Landscape of 1862
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: 19th-Century Chromolithograph of Bethlehem – Biblical Landscape After David Roberts Description: This remarkable 19th-century chromolithograph presents a sweeping and historically significant view of Bethlehem, one of the most revered locations in Christian history. The print originates from the 1862 publication *De Middelaar God en der Menschen - Tafereelen uit Jezus' Leven en Werk op Aarde* by J.J.L. Ten Kate, published by Gebroeders Kraay in Amsterdam. The composition is based on an original plate by the renowned British artist David Roberts (1796–1864), whose breathtaking illustrations of biblical sites remain highly sought after by collectors. The scene captures the rugged and rolling hills leading to Bethlehem, with its ancient buildings and religious structures nestled among the rocky terrain. The foreground features a winding path where travelers on foot and horseback make their way toward the city, while the distant mountains add depth and grandeur to the composition. Notably, the Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest and most significant Christian sites, can be seen among the buildings, emphasizing the town's deep historical and spiritual significance. The chromolithographic technique used in this print allows for subtle color variations and fine detailing, bringing the landscape to life with a soft, naturalistic palette. This piece is particularly appealing to collectors of biblical art, historical views of the Holy Land, and 19th-century travel prints...
