Perch, Pike-Perch, and Ruffe - Majestic Scandinavian Fish Lithograph, 1895

About the Item

Perch, Pike-Perch, and Ruffe - Majestic Scandinavian Fish Lithograph This beautifully detailed 19th-century lithograph from 'Skandinaviens Fiskar' showcases three iconic freshwater fish of Scandinavia: the European Perch (Perca fluviatilis), the Pike-Perch or Zander (Stizostedion lucioperca), and the Ruffe (Acerina cernua). Renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and vibrant hand coloring, this print reflects the dedication to scientific accuracy and aesthetic appeal that defines Wilhelm von Wright’s work. At the top of the print, the European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) is elegantly rendered with its characteristic dark green vertical stripes and reddish lower fins. The subtle shading and meticulous detail emphasize the fish’s sleek, muscular body and sharp dorsal spines. The Perch is a common species throughout Scandinavian lakes and rivers, celebrated for its distinctive coloration and sporting value. In the center of the composition lies the Pike-Perch or Zander (Stizostedion lucioperca), depicted with a streamlined, elongated body and a blend of olive and gray tones. Its pointed head and sharp, spiny dorsal fin give it a fierce and predatory appearance, perfectly capturing the essence of this highly valued game fish. The finely detailed scales and realistic shading demonstrate Wright’s remarkable talent in natural history illustration. At the bottom is the Ruffe (Acerina cernua), a small yet distinctive fish with a compact body and a spiny dorsal fin that appears almost exaggerated compared to its size. Its olive-brown hue, patterned with darker spots, blends naturally into the freshwater environments it inhabits. The Ruffe’s unique texture and form are expertly portrayed, reflecting Wright’s meticulous attention to detail. Wilhelm von Wright, a master of natural history illustration, worked alongside prominent naturalists B. Fries, C. U. Ekström, and C. Sundevall under the guidance of F. A. Smitt to produce *Skandinaviens Fiskar*. Published in Stockholm by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag, this monumental work documented the remarkable diversity of Scandinavian fish, combining scientific precision with artistic excellence. The lithographic technique used to create this print involved precise line work complemented by vibrant hand coloring, giving the image depth and a lifelike quality. This labor-intensive process ensured that each print was unique, celebrated for both its scientific accuracy and its aesthetic value. Condition: The condition of this print is outstanding, with bright colors and crisp details, making it a perfect candidate for framing. Framing Tips: To preserve its beauty and highlight the stunning coloration, consider using a classic frame with neutral matting, allowing the intricate fish depictions to take center stage. An ideal addition to any natural history collection or a sophisticated interior display.
