About the Item
Large Antique Dog Poster – Poodle and Hound by Briedwiser c.1880
Description:
This large original zoological teaching poster was published circa 1880 by Carl Gerold’s Sohn in Vienna. Measuring approximately 65 x 84 cm, it features two finely detailed chromolithographed illustrations of dog breeds, painted by Th. Briedwiser:
Upper image: Standard Poodle in classic continental clip, showing its distinctive curly white coat, shaved legs, and elegant posture, positioned before a building entrance.
Lower image: German Hound or similar pointer breed, depicted standing alert in a rural landscape with brown and white coat markings, long limbs, and an attentive expression.
These life-sized or near life-sized illustrations were originally intended for educational use in schools and universities to teach animal husbandry, breed recognition, and zoological anatomy. The colours remain vivid with realistic fur textures and breed characteristics, demonstrating the artistic precision of early 20th-century natural history lithography.
Condition:
Good condition overall. The paper is clear and shows bright colours. Some age toning, especially to outer margins, occasional handling marks, and a few minor edge tears consistent with use in a classroom setting. The main illustrations remain unaffected and highly displayable.
Framing tips:
Due to its impressive poster format, this print will make an eye-catching feature in any veterinary practice, grooming salon, dog breeder’s office, or country house interior. Frame it in a simple black, oak, or dark walnut wooden frame to emphasise the academic and historical character, with or without a mat border depending on the desired presentation.
This is an authentic antique plate and not a reproduction. It is ideal for collectors of canine art, veterinary history, and lovers of poodles, pointers, and hounds who seek original decorative works with heritage and scientific charm.
