This finely executed 19th-century stipple engraving features a neoclassical profile portrait of the French Romantic poet, historian, and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869). The composition presents Lamartine in left-facing profile as a sculptural bust, set against a horizontally lined background. His name, Lamartine, is engraved above, and the date 1843 is inscribed below the neckline of the bust.
The engraving is based on a medallion by Pierre-Jean David d’Angers, a prominent sculptor and medallist who was well known for his portraits of leading literary and political figures. The engraving itself was completed by Achille-Louis Martinet, a master of the stipple technique, who brought extraordinary delicacy and precision to the rendering.
