About the Item

Portrait of Christ – Engraving After Rubens by Paul Pontius, South Netherlands, 1633 This 17th-century engraving presents a powerful and contemplative portrait of Christ, based on a design by the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) and engraved by Paul Pontius (1603–1658). Created in Antwerp in 1633, this print is a fine example of South Netherlandish devotional art and Baroque engraving technique. Christ is depicted in a half-length frontal pose, his gaze directed outward with solemn dignity. The expression is both human and divine, rendered with great sensitivity. The fine line work and dramatic use of light and shadow reflect Pontius’s technical skill and deep understanding of Rubens’ expressive visual language. The engraving features a three-line Latin caption in the lower margin, accompanied by a six-line Latin dedication or assignment. There is also a stamp on the verso, lower left, that reads “Portrait of Christ.” These elements reinforce the work’s devotional and artistic purpose, and the longer caption may suggest a specific patron or context of publication. Paul Pontius was one of Rubens’ most trusted engravers and worked extensively to translate his master’s paintings into widely circulated prints. This collaboration helped extend Rubens’ influence throughout Europe. This particular engraving exemplifies that partnership and remains a poignant and historically significant devotional image. Medium: Engraving on paper Date: Engraved in 1633, after a work by Rubens (1577–1640) Origin: Antwerp, South Netherlands Condition: Very good condition. Strong impression with well-preserved detail. Minor age toning and light handling marks typical of the period. Tight but original margins with Latin captions. Stamp on the verso, lower left. Framing suggestion: This work would suit a simple dark wood or black frame with an off-white or cream mat. Museum glass is recommended to protect the paper and preserve the detail of the engraving. A strong standalone devotional piece or a striking addition to a collection of Old Master prints.
