About the Item

Portrait of Sir Francis Bacon – Late 18th-Century Engraving by R. Delvaux Finely executed late 18th-century line engraving of Sir Francis Bacon, Viscount St Alban (1561–1626), the English philosopher, statesman, and essayist often regarded as the father of empiricism. Bacon is shown half-length, turned slightly to his left, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, elaborate ruff, and richly embroidered robes. The portrait is framed within an oval set into a rectangular stone plinth inscribed “FR. BACON.” Engraved by R. Delvaux, whose name appears below the image, this work is after an earlier painted portrait of Bacon, and was most likely produced between circa 1780 and 1795 for inclusion in a historical or biographical publication. Delvaux’s delicate cross-hatching and precise line work capture the fine textures of the clothing and the sitter’s composed, intellectual expression. Condition: Very good impression with crisp lines. Light age toning to sheet; faint foxing and a few handling marks in the wide margins. Slight waviness to paper from age. Platemark distinct and paper stable. Framing tips: A simple black, walnut, or dark oak frame will contrast well with the engraving’s monochrome detail. An off-white or light cream mount will complement the paper tone and keep the viewer’s focus on the intricate portrait. Technique: Line engraving Maker: R. Delvaux, England, circa 1780–1795
