About the Item
Title: Portrait Study of Indigenous People of New Holland
Description: This finely detailed lithograph, circa 1836, features a series of portrait studies depicting Indigenous people of New Holland (modern-day Australia). Each subject is carefully rendered, showcasing a range of expressions, hairstyles, and attire that reflect the diversity and individuality of the people encountered during Dumont d'Urville’s expedition aboard the Astrolabe.
The upper row portrays women from the Kangaroo Islands, characterized by their shaved or closely cropped hairstyles and adorned with simple garments. The middle row features men from Port Jervis, including "Djacaumé," distinguished by their beards, expressive faces, and traditional clothing. The bottom row depicts Mokare, a well-known guide and intermediary, along with other individuals, offering insights into the cultural and physical diversity of Indigenous Australian communities at the time.
This lithograph, created by Louis Auguste de Sainson, served as a visual documentation of the encounters during the voyage. It was reproduced in Brodtmann’s *Entdeckungs, Reise der Franzosischen Corvette Astrolabe* and reflects the European fascination with ethnography during the 19th century, capturing both the humanity and exoticism perceived by explorers.
