About the Item

Title: Pyramids and Catacombs at Saqqara – Burial Chambers and Section Views, Egypt 1776 Description: This rare 1776 engraving offers a detailed visual record of the pyramids and underground burial chambers at Saqqara, one of the oldest and most historically important necropolises in Egypt. Numbered Plate XXI, the engraving comes from the Dutch edition of Richard Pococke’s travel narrative, which documented his journey through Egypt and the Middle East during the 18th century. At the top left is a sectional plan of a catacomb, showing labeled corridors, chambers, and shaft entries marked with letters such as A, B, X, F, and G. Drapery surrounds the image, giving it a dramatic presentation style typical of antiquarian engravings of the period. To the right of it is a small grid labeled C, likely representing a tomb chamber layout or burial shaft array. To the center right, an extended floor plan of another catacomb system is shown, consisting of long corridors with regularly spaced niches and side chambers. These burial galleries reflect the multi-level and complex layout used in ancient Egyptian funerary architecture at Saqqara, particularly in connection with royal and elite tombs. At the bottom of the plate are two pyramid profiles. On the left, labeled G, is a flat-topped or eroded pyramid, possibly unfinished or partially collapsed. To the right, labeled F, is a stepped pyramid that closely resembles the famous Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest known large-scale stone structure in Egypt, designed by the architect Imhotep around 2600 BCE. The Dutch caption reads, "Gezigt van twee Pyramiden, en de Grondteekeningen van twee Katakomben te Sakkara," which translates to "View of two pyramids and ground plans of two catacombs at Saqqara." These diagrams reflect early European interest in the funerary landscape of ancient Egypt and represent one of the first recorded architectural studies of the Saqqara complex. This plate belongs to *Beschryving van het Oosten en van eenige andere landen* (Description of the East and Some Other Lands), translated and annotated by Ernst Willem Cramerus, published in 1776 in Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam. Condition report: Very good condition. Light age toning and some minor spotting along the upper right edge. Central vertical crease from original binding. Strong plate impression and wide margins. Blank on verso. Framing tips: This architectural and archaeological composition would pair well with a black or deep walnut frame and a warm ivory or beige mat. A fitting addition to collections focused on ancient Egypt, exploration, or early scientific illustration. Technique: Engraving Maker: Unknown engraver after Richard Pococke, Netherlands, 1776
