About the Item

Romantic 19th Century Engraving – Pyrenean Peasants Couple with Dog, c.1840 Description: This is a beautifully detailed 19th-century steel engraving titled Pyrenean Peasants (Landvolk aus den Pyrenäen), depicting a young couple seated closely together on a rocky hillside in the Pyrenees mountains, accompanied by their loyal dog resting at their feet. The shepherd is shown with a crook, wearing traditional regional attire including a broad-brimmed hat, waistcoat, and loose shirt, while the woman sits gracefully beside him with her head gently leaning against his shoulder, her hair covered with a long shawl, evoking a tender and serene rural moment. Engraved by H. Adlard after an original painting by an unknown continental artist, this print was published by A.H. Payne, Dresden & Leipzig, around 1840–1850, as part of a series of ethnographic and romantic European genre scenes aimed at a middle-class audience seeking elegant imagery for drawing rooms and libraries. The fine crosshatching, delicate tonal gradations, and atmospheric mountainous background are characteristic of high-quality steel engravings of this era. Condition report: Overall very good for age. Light general toning to the paper, mild foxing in margins, plate mark deeply impressed, and edges with minor handling wear. The engraved area remains strong, clean, and detailed with no tears or repairs. Framing tips: Ideal for framing with a warm cream or antique white mount and a classic wood or black moulding to accentuate the rustic romanticism and timeless character of this scene. Suitable for interiors styled with traditional European, rustic, or romantic decor, enhancing hallways, living rooms, or reading corners with its peaceful rural sentiment.

Located in Langweer, NL
The antique print described is a captivating representation of rural life from the early 19th century, engraved by Ludwig Emil Grimm and published around 1825.
