About the Item

Radiant Festival Dress of South Beveland Couple, ca. 1780–1840 This exquisite and vividly colored costume plate from The National Costumes of Holland (1932) captures the striking Sunday and festival attire of a couple from South Beveland, Zeeland, as worn between approximately 1780 and 1840. Based on historical documentation and observations by Maaskamp in 1814, the costumes depicted are an adaptation of mid-18th-century bourgeois fashion, interpreted with local flair by the peasantry, and imbued with both festive elegance and meticulous detail. The woman’s ensemble is centered around the 'stoklijf', a stiffened bodice rendered here in rich reddish-brown damask patterned with a Persian-inspired 'pineapple' motif in black. Boned and structured, this bodice is fastened with a delicate brooch at the front. Over it, she wears the 'beuk', a flowing panel of flowered chintz edged with pink and red ribbon, crossing over her chest and secured by broad silk ribbons featuring traditional gold and silver motifs. Her elbow-length sleeves are made of brocade and trimmed in blue and white braid, adding to the luxuriant texture of the costume. The under-cap is formed from white batiste edged in lace, over which sits the 'trek muts'—a tightly goffered draw-in cap, which is further adorned with 'Antwerpse potten kant', a lace derivative of Italian Annunziata lace. The vestigial straw hat, or 'schulp hoed', is bound with black ribbon and tied under the chin with red silk ribbons. Four large flowered ribbons hang from beneath the hat brim, completing the festive headwear. She wears a full, boldly striped skirt, or *schobben*, in tones of brown, scarlet, purple, white, and green, with a richly brocaded hem and a matching apron of heavy linen. Her blue cashmere stockings and butterfly-buckled black leather shoes provide the perfect finishing touches to this opulent festival look. The man, standing proudly beside her, wears a brightly colored floral waistcoat in rich green and crimson tones, with rows of decorative silver buttons across his belt and hips. His breeches are of finely ribbed black velvet, fastened just below the knees with coordinating bows. His accessories—red neckerchief, striped shirt, and broad-brimmed black hat—mirror the splendor of the woman’s attire. This couple epitomizes rural refinement in 18th–19th-century Zeeland, bringing to life the ceremonial garments of a bygone era. Condition: Excellent overall. The print retains vibrant color saturation and crisp detail. Minor edge toning and a few faint spots consistent with age. The plate shows only minimal handling wear and remains highly suitable for display or framing. Framing Suggestion: This arresting composition would look magnificent when float-mounted in a deep shadow box or set against a subtly textured off-white mat. A dark walnut or gold-leaf frame would enhance the richness of the colors and bring out the historical charm, making it a refined statement piece in any collection of European costume art or folk heritage.
