Rare 1592 Woodcut of Deer from Sebastian Münster's "Cosmographia"

About the Item

Title: Rare 1592 Woodcut of Deer from Sebastian Münster's "Cosmographia" Description: This remarkable woodcut, published in Basel in 1592, originates from Sebastian Münster's monumental "Cosmographia." Measuring approximately 5 3/4" by 4 1/8" (image size), it depicts two deer rendered with meticulous detail and a touch of artistic whimsy typical of 16th-century natural history illustrations. The print is mounted in a ~ 8 1/2" by 13" mat, ready for display. Münster's "Cosmographia" was a groundbreaking work of its time, compiling all known geographical knowledge into a single volume. It featured maps, city views, and woodcut illustrations covering mythology, natural history, and ethnography. As the first publication to name the Pacific Ocean and correctly depict the American continents, it revolutionized cartography and historical understanding. Sebastian Münster (1489–1552), a Franciscan monk, cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebrew scholar, was among the leading intellectuals of his era. This woodcut is a tangible link to his pioneering contributions to geography and natural history, making it a prized piece for collectors and history enthusiasts alike. Condition: Minimal age-related wear, consistent with a well-preserved woodcut from the late 16th century.
