Rare 1808 Engraving of Krishna's Triumph Over Serpent Kaliya

About the Item

1808 Engraving of Krishna's Triumph Over Serpent Kaliya Description: This enchanting antique print, titled "Quichena, Dansant sur le Serpent Calongam," captures a dynamic moment of the Hindu deity Quichena, an avatar of Krishna, dancing triumphantly on the serpent Calongam (Kaliya). Published in 1808, this artwork is part of Pierre Sonnerat's renowned "Voyage aux Indes orientales et à la Chine," a detailed account of his travels through India. Sonnerat, a French naturalist and explorer, collaborated with the artist Poinson to produce this illustration, reflecting the European fascination with Indian mythology during the early 19th century. The print, marked as Plate 57, depicts a significant episode from Hindu mythology where Krishna subdues the poisonous serpent Kaliya, who had been terrorizing the Yamuna River, to protect the people of Vrindavan. The print was created using copperplate engraving, a technique celebrated for its precision in capturing fine details, such as the serpent's scales and Krishna's ornate attire. Quichena is shown in a graceful pose, adorned with jewelry, a headdress, and flowing garments, with the serpent coiled around him, symbolizing his divine victory over evil. The intricate patterns on the serpent and Krishna's clothing highlight the skill of the engraver. What makes this print particularly captivating is its portrayal of movement and triumph, blending mythological storytelling with artistic elegance. It also offers a window into the cultural exchange of the period, as European artists like Sonnerat interpreted and illustrated Eastern traditions, creating a visual dialogue between the two worlds that remains compelling to this day. Condition Report: The print displays minor foxing and slight yellowing on the edges. A faint crease on the lower right corner is present but does not affect the central image. Overall, it remains in good condition for its age. Framing Tips: Use an acid-free mat to protect against aging. Choose a sleek wooden frame with a gold accent to enhance its elegance. Opt for UV-protective glass to prevent fading, and display in a low-humidity space away from direct sunlight.
