Antique print, titled: 'A. Scaro vario - B. Scarius.' - Kreta nu Kandia on top of the page. This original antique print shows fish from Crete with ships in the background. Dutch text on verso.

Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Olfert Dapper' after an anonymous artist. Made by 'Olfert Dapper' after an anonymous artist. Olfert Dapper (c. 1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician and writer. He wrote books about history and geography, although he never travelled outside Holland. Until today, his book Description of Africa (1668) is a key text for Africanists.
Technic: Copperplate engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.
Condition: Good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

This fascinating folio engraving is from Johann Jakob Scheuchzer’s Physica Sacra. The work was published in Augsburg und Ulm between 1731 and 1735. Each engraving features highly decorative borders which feature biblical and scientific depictions.
Physica Sacra combined theological and scientific practices in an attempt to reconcile biblical passages with the new sciences of the time. The work is an extraordinary illustrated natural history work, and a great example of the decorative nature of the 18th century copper engraving.
