About the Item
Antique Botanical Print – Orchid Odontoglossum coronarium, c.1888
An extraordinary antique botanical print of Odontoglossum Coronarium, a visually commanding orchid species, from the legendary orchid folio Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described (1888–1894). This striking chromolithograph captures the sheer exuberance of this richly colored orchid, known for its dense clusters of bright, frilled blooms arranged along tall, upright stems.
The artwork depicts a showy inflorescence composed of dozens of deep maroon-red blossoms with scalloped edges, each delicately spotted and marked in gold and brown. The flowers contrast vividly with their creamy white lips, drawing the eye to the heart of each bloom. The spike rises boldly from a base of elongated green leaves and sheathed pseudobulbs, its height and symmetry echoing the architectural grandeur of Victorian orchid displays.
This print was created by Henry Moon (1857–1905), the principal illustrator for the Reichenbachia project, whose signature appears at the lower left. It was lithographed by Joseph Mansell in London, one of the most accomplished chromolithographers of his time. Commissioned by orchid magnate Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, the *Reichenbachia* volumes were produced at great expense and issued in very limited numbers for aristocrats, botanists, and collectors during the height of orchid mania in the late 19th century.
Odontoglossum Coronarium, native to the mountainous cloud forests of South America, is prized for both its vibrant coloration and floriferous habit. This botanical plate preserves its beauty in meticulous detail, making it a valuable addition for collectors of orchidiana, natural history illustration, and decorative art.
