About the Item

Regal Seated Figures in Ceremonial Dress, circa 15th Century This visually rich pair of costume prints, Plates No. 92 and 93 from the 1845 publication Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles, offers a rare and vivid portrayal of two high-ranking figures seated on stylized thrones, dressed in full ceremonial regalia. Their static posture is balanced by a wealth of detail in textile, pattern, and color, capturing the power and pomp of state or religious authority in the late medieval and early Renaissance period. In Plate No. 92, we see a bearded figure seated formally on a pale yellow and red-cushioned throne, wearing an ornate robe in blue and green with accents of gold and crimson. His pointed hat and long green cloak are embroidered with heraldic and ornamental motifs. He holds a palm frond in his right hand, likely signifying victory, sanctity, or peace. His posture is upright, and the details in his beard, hemline, and stool below his feet emphasize the regal dignity and ceremonial symbolism. Plate No. 93 presents a contrasting yet complementary image: a female or possibly ecclesiastical figure also enthroned, dressed in layered pink and blue robes with extensive gold ornamentation. She wears a tall conical headdress and gestures slightly with one hand, seated before a deep crimson backdrop framed by an arched throne with stylized finials and twisted columns. The dramatic red upholstery adds depth, while her calm, reflective expression and upright posture suggest a sacred or queenly role, further supported by her elevated position on the throne and platform. Together, these prints create a narrative of paired governance, spiritual and temporal power, or theatrical representation. Their symmetrical composition and shared thematic elements make them ideal for side-by-side display. Condition Both prints are in very good visual condition. Plate 92 is bright and clean with only slight foxing in the margins. Plate 93 shows more pronounced foxing in the border area but retains a strong, clear image. Colors are vivid and well preserved in both. Framing tips Present these works together in a single double-opening frame or as a diptych in identical gold or walnut frames. Use a warm white or parchment-toned mat with generous spacing to echo the regal themes. Perfect for display in offices, libraries, or interiors that embrace medieval and ecclesiastical aesthetics.
