Regal Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit – A Rare 18th-Century Masterpiece

About the Item

Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit, 18th-Century Engraving This finely hand-colored engraving portrays a Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit (Ordre du Saint-Esprit), one of the most prestigious chivalric orders of the French monarchy, founded in 1578 by King Henry III. The knight is dressed in an ornate ceremonial robe of black velvet, richly embroidered with gold fleurs-de-lis and other royal motifs, and adorned with the iconic white Maltese cross. A plumed hat adds an air of regal dignity to the composition, reflecting the grandeur of French courtly traditions. The engraving originates from the series "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders," published between 1779 and 1791. Each piece in this remarkable collection showcases the distinctive attire of various chivalric and monastic orders, offering a glimpse into the pageantry and social hierarchy of 18th-century Europe. The work was highly regarded for its detailed depictions and historical commentary, compiled to educate and fascinate contemporary audiences. This artwork captures the elegance and historical significance of one of France's most revered orders, making it a prized addition for collectors of heraldry, costume history, or French monarchy memorabilia. Condition Report: Excellent condition for its age, with strong coloring and minimal foxing. Light age-related toning along the edges, typical for late 18th-century engravings, does not detract from the overall presentation. Framing Tip: Enhance the engraving's striking details with a double mat in cream and black, paired with a gold or antique black frame. This combination will draw attention to the knight's splendid attire while protecting the artwork for display.

Antique 18th Century Map of the Province of Pensilvania 'Pennsylvania State'
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine antique of the colony of Pennsylvania. Noted at the top of the sheet as a 'Map of the province of Pensilvania'. This undated and anonymous map is thought to be from the Gentleman's Magazine, London, circa 1775, although the general appearance could date it to the 1760's. The southern boundary reflects the Mason-Dixon survey (1768), the western boundary is placed just west of Pittsburgh, and the northern boundary is not marked. The map has a number of reference points that likely refer to companion text and appear to be connected to boundaries. The western and southern boundaries are marked Q, R, S, for example. A diagonal line runs from the Susquehanna R to the Lake Erie P. A broken line marked by many letters A, B, N, O, etc., appears in the east. There are no latitude or longitude markings, blank verso. Framed in a shaped contemporary gilt wooden frame and matted under a cream colored matte. Bearing an old Graham Arader Gallery...
