About the Item

Religious Ceremony of the Inhabitants of the Island of Hispaniola, 1734 Description: This vividly hand-colored copperplate engraving, issued in 1734 in Bernard Picart’s monumental work *Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde*, presents a dramatic interpretation of a religious ritual practiced by the indigenous people of Hispaniola, the Caribbean island known today as home to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The scene depicts a large gathering inside a vaulted ceremonial structure, with elaborately dressed figures, likely priests or chieftains, performing rites before golden idols. These statues, rendered with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features, reflect the European attempt to capture the exoticism and spiritual fervor of non-Christian cultures, filtered through a lens of 18th-century curiosity and theatricality. In the foreground, figures dance, kneel, chant, and beat drums. Their feathered headdresses, necklaces, and loincloths—colored in rich blues, reds, and yellows—convey a sense of cultural pageantry. The gathering appears both celebratory and solemn, with rhythmic gestures and offerings made to the idols placed at the heart of the scene. Behind the main group, a procession of islanders is shown emerging from the background, suggesting the communal and highly participatory nature of the event. The curved structure, possibly a temple or sacred enclosure, adds a sense of grandeur and enclosure, while the stormy sky above hints at divine presence or cosmic significance. Though not based on direct observation, Picart’s engraving reflects Enlightenment Europe's desire to document, analyze, and often dramatize the religious practices of indigenous cultures. As such, it represents both a historical artifact and a window into the period’s fascination with global customs. Condition: Very good overall, with vibrant original hand-coloring and strong impression. Mild toning near the edges and a small crease to the upper right margin, far from the image. The plate retains wide margins and is printed on laid paper with visible chain lines. Framing tip: This print would be well-suited to a classic black or mahogany frame with a deep off-white or parchment-toned mat. Its color and composition make it an arresting focal piece for a collection focused on ethnographic or colonial-era art.
