About the Item
Ecclesiastical Figure in Ceremonial Robes, circa 1400
This elegant hand-colored engraving, plate number 83 from the renowned 1845 publication Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles, presents a striking figure of ecclesiastical authority clad in richly layered ceremonial garments.
As with other plates in the series, this image draws from historical paintings and sculptures to provide an accurate depiction of late medieval clerical dress, likely representing a bishop or abbot of high rank.
The figure wears a long, vertically pleated robe in pale blue, topped by a vivid rose-colored chasuble edged in gold and lined with white. Over this is draped a richly embroidered stole, adorned with black crosses and golden tassels at either end, symbols associated with spiritual authority and clerical hierarchy. The heavily ornamented breastpiece and hem further emphasize this figure’s elevated religious role. A black mantle or hood covers the head and shoulders, lending a somber, dignified contrast to the otherwise luminous attire.
In his hands, the figure cradles a book—likely a missal or prayer book—indicating his liturgical role. His gaze is lowered in a contemplative expression, suggesting solemnity and spiritual dedication. The use of color is particularly striking here: the balance of warm pinks and gold against the cool blue robe and black hood adds depth and vibrancy to the composition, without overwhelming its sacred tone.
This print is a valuable piece for collectors of ecclesiastical art, costume historians, or those with an interest in the rituals and symbolism of medieval religious life. Its authenticity, grace, and fine color application make it suitable for decorative use in libraries, studies, or institutional spaces with historical or religious themes.
Condition
The print is in very good condition. The image area is clean and bright, with only some minor age spotting. Colors remain strong with gold highlighted, and no fading. The paper is stable with no folds or tears.
Framing tips
To frame this ecclesiastical plate to best advantage, consider using a deep cream or soft parchment-toned mat to echo the aged paper. A gold frame with subtle religious detailing or a dark wooden frame will enhance the liturgical theme and emphasize the richness of the garments. Suitable as a standalone piece or as part of a series of related prints.

Set of Four Antique French Religious Carbon Prints by Maison AD. Braun & Cie
Located in COLMAR, FR
These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969.
This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s.
The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels".
The female saint holding a book is from the artwork "Annunciation" by the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi...
