About the Item

Flora Dispensing her Favors on Earth- Robert John Thornton, 1768-1837, from "The Temple of Flora" London 1799-1810. This aquatint and stipple engraving partially printed in colors, was engraved by T. Woolnoth after Richard Cosway. It was issued as one of the front pieces to Dr. Robert Thornton's "The Temple of Flora" and published in London in 1807. As a lecturer on medical botany, Thornton's intention was to make "The Temple of Flora" the greatest tribute possible to the famous Swedish botanist Linnaeus. He commissioned the best painters and engravers to create the plates which showed the flowers life sized against a background depicting their natural habitat. Today Thornton's floral engravings are among the most sought after of all natural history prints. Beautifully matted and framed in a gold gilt wooden frame. Site line 20" tall x 15" wide.
