About the Item

Antique Roman Hunting Scenes – Hyenas and Wild Boar, Goeree after Desseine, 1704 This antique engraving, published in 1704 by François Halma after designs by Jan Goeree, depicts two dramatic hunting scenes inspired by Roman antiquity. The upper image (Tab. XXVIII) shows soldiers using large shields to confront wild hyenas, one of which is attacking and another subdued beneath the warriors’ defense. To the left, a baiting cage with a sculpted head lures the animal, an inventive depiction of ancient hunting strategy. The lower engraving (Tab. XXIX) illustrates a fierce wild boar hunt, with mounted and foot soldiers armed with spears and bows surrounding the animal. The dynamic poses, flowing drapery, and strong composition emphasize the valor and discipline of Roman hunters. This plate originates from 'Beschryving van Oud en Nieuw Rome' (Description of Ancient and New Rome), written by François Desseine, first published in French in 1690 and translated into Dutch by Halma in 1704. The work was richly illustrated, and the engravings were executed to a standard that rivaled the later works of Piranesi. Because of the quality of the plates, complete copies are rare—most were disassembled to sell the engravings individually. These hunting scenes are significant as they not only reflect ancient Roman practices but also embody the Baroque fascination with antiquity, valor, and spectacle. Goeree’s designs combine classical references with the 17th-century taste for theatricality, making this a collectible work for those interested in classical antiquity, Roman history, and early 18th-century printmaking. Condition: Good, with visible plate marks. Light age toning and faint handling marks to the margins, not affecting the images. Paper strong, with no major tears or losses. Framing tips: A dark wood or ebony frame with a cream or warm off-white mat would enhance the classical subject. For a more dramatic effect, consider a gilt frame with a deep mat to echo the grandeur of Baroque engravings. Technique: Engraving Maker: Jan Goeree (designer), François Halma (publisher), Netherlands, 1704
