About the Item

Romanesque Decorative Prints by H. Dolmetsch, 1890, Manuscript and Mural Designs This pair of richly colored lithographic plates by Hermann Dolmetsch, published around 1887 in Stuttgart by Verlag Jul. Hoffmann, presents stunning examples of Romanesque ornamental design as compiled in the monumental work *Ornamentenschatz* (Treasure of Ornament). The two prints—plate 35 titled Manuscript-Malerei und Email and plate 36 titled Wandmalerei—capture the intricate and symbolic visual language of medieval ecclesiastical decoration. Plate 35 focuses on Romanesque manuscript illumination and enameling, showcasing decorative initials, zoomorphic motifs, stylized flora, and religious iconography with central figures including Christ on the Cross and angelic hosts. The page is bordered and filled with colorful geometric and floral ornament, reflecting the vibrancy and symmetry so characteristic of medieval codices and church decoration. Plate 36 features wall painting designs, or Wandmalerei, from the Romanesque tradition. Dominated by a full-length angelic figure in brilliant robes and multicolored wings, this plate also includes an array of richly bordered friezes, interlacing vegetal patterns, stylized animal medallions, and ceiling mosaic motifs. These designs recall the decorative schemes used in monastic churches and cathedrals of the 11th and 12th centuries. Hermann Dolmetsch (1846–1908), an architect and art historian, compiled these illustrations based on historical European, Asian, and Middle Eastern sources. His *Ornamentenschatz* remains one of the most celebrated 19th-century compilations of global ornamental design, valued for both its visual appeal and historical documentation. Condition: These original chromolithographs are in very good condition with strong, vivid colors and fine detail. Some light age toning and minor spotting may be present at the margins, consistent with age. No tears or major defects are noted. Framing Tips: These prints will look exceptional when matted in off-white or cream and framed in simple, dark wood or gilt frames to highlight the vivid coloration. Due to their rich detail, a generous mat border helps to give them visual breathing room. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the pigment quality over time. They can be displayed together as a diptych or individually as focal pieces in an ecclesiastical, historical, or eclectic interior setting.
