The Royal Family of France, The Bonaparte Family, and French Generals, 1815

About the Item

Title: The Royal Family of France, The Bonaparte Family, and French Generals, 1815 Description: This finely engraved 1816 print presents a detailed array of portraits depicting key figures from the French monarchy, the Bonaparte family, and prominent French generals and statesmen. Published as part of *The Campaign of Waterloo*, this print served as a historical record of the political and military leaders who shaped France during and after the Napoleonic era. At the top center of the composition is King Louis XVIII, who was restored to the throne following Napoleon’s abdication. Surrounding him are members of the Bourbon royal family, including the Comte d’Artois, the future Charles X, and other aristocratic figures who played a role in the monarchy’s return after Napoleon’s fall. Their placement at the uppermost section of the print symbolizes the reinstated royal order in post-Napoleonic France. Below the Bourbon monarchs, the focus shifts to the Bonaparte family, featuring Napoleon Bonaparte himself, his brother Joseph Bonaparte, and other close relatives such as Lucien, Louis, and Jérôme Bonaparte. Also included is Marie Louise, Napoleon’s second wife, along with his son, Napoleon II, also known as the King of Rome. These portraits emphasize the ruling dynasty that briefly replaced the Bourbons and nearly reshaped Europe under Napoleon’s reign. Further down, the engraving showcases the military leaders and statesmen who supported Napoleon’s campaigns, including Marshal Ney, Marshal Soult, Marshal Davout, and Marshal Murat. These generals were instrumental in leading French forces across Europe and remained some of the most recognized names in Napoleonic history. Other statesmen and political figures such as Talleyrand, a key diplomat who played both sides of the conflict, are also featured. The composition is meticulously arranged with classical decorative elements, including laurel wreaths and an imperial eagle at the bottom center, reinforcing France’s military legacy. The elegant framing and precision of each portrait reflect the neoclassical artistic style popular in early 19th-century historical prints. This engraving, published by Robert Bowyer, would have been highly sought after by collectors of the time, offering a visual record of the key figures involved in France’s turbulent transition from empire to restored monarchy. Today, it remains an essential historical artifact for those interested in Napoleonic history, French royal portraiture, and early 19th-century engravings. Condition Report: Paper in good condition with scattered foxing and minor edge wear. Some age-related discoloration, particularly near the margins. Engraving details remain sharp and well-defined. Some handling marks and minor creases, but no major tears or losses. A well-preserved and historically significant piece. Framing Tips: - Use acid-free, museum-quality matting to protect the paper and enhance contrast. - UV-resistant glass or acrylic is recommended to preserve the engraving’s crisp details and prevent fading. - A neoclassical-style wooden frame, either dark-stained or gilded, will complement the engraving’s period aesthetic. - Display in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity to ensure long-term preservation. This engraving serves as both a historical document and a visual tribute to the influential figures who shaped France during one of its most pivotal eras.
