About the Item
Satire on the South Sea Bubble and British Society by William Hogarth, 1721
Description:
This compelling satirical engraving, originally published in 1721 by William Hogarth, is titled "An Emblematical Print on the South Sea Scheme." It is a vivid and complex visual commentary on the infamous South Sea Bubble financial scandal that rocked Britain in 1720. This hand-colored print brilliantly captures the speculative frenzy, moral corruption, and societal chaos that followed the collapse of the South Sea Company, a historical financial disaster comparable to modern stock market crashes.
At the heart of the composition is a giant merry-go-round labeled “The Devil's Wheel,” with figures representing the rich, clergy, and politicians foolishly riding wooden animals, symbolizing the irrational enthusiasm for profit. Surrounding this central motif are a host of bizarre and absurd scenes: a goat leads blindfolded investors, Fortune is whipped naked, and Honest Industry is crushed beneath a wheel. These sharp visual metaphors expose the loss of reason and virtue during this speculative mania.
Above the main panel are two additional vignettes: “The Laughing Audience” and “Rehearsal of the Oratorio of Judith,” also by Hogarth, which further lampoon the credulity and moral weakness of the public. These works illustrate Hogarth’s unique ability to blend biting political satire with detailed, expressive engravings.
William Hogarth (1697–1764) is celebrated as one of England’s greatest graphic satirists. His work remains widely collected and exhibited for its historical insight and masterful technique. This piece is particularly desirable for collectors of British history, financial history, and early 18th-century political satire. Keywords such as South Sea Bubble, William Hogarth, British satire, financial crisis, antique engraving, and speculative mania will help attract interest to this listing.
