About the Item
Set of 3 Antique Fly Prints – Sumatra Diptera Species c.1880
Description:
This set of three antique lithographs depicts various Diptera (fly) species from the Dutch natural history exploration of Midden-Sumatra (Central Sumatra) in the late 19th century. The plates are titled *Midden-Sumatra IV.9* with plates *Dept. Pl. I*, *Pl. II*, and *Pl. III*, drawn by F.M.W., lithographed by A.J.W., and printed by P.W\.M. Trap.
The first plate illustrates Sciara species, with anatomical details of wings, antennae, and mouthparts. The second plate focuses on Microdon and Daxia flies, showing full body illustrations, eyes, wing venation, and larval forms with meticulous scientific accuracy. The third plate depicts diverse species including Chrysopacha and Discomyza flies, showing their morphological diversity with detailed studies of their wings, legs, and head structures.
These prints were created under the supervision of Dutch entomologists to document Sumatra’s rich Diptera biodiversity, combining precise taxonomy with aesthetic illustration techniques typical of the 19th-century scientific expeditions. They remain highly collectible today, ideal for natural history collections, entomology-themed decor, or tropical biodiversity research.
Condition report:
All three prints are in good condition with strong impressions and clean margins. Minor age toning and faint spots typical of age are present but do not affect the illustrations. Paper remains stable with no tears or repairs.
Framing tips:
These prints will display beautifully in matching black or dark wood frames with a slim gold inner edge to enhance their delicate illustrations. Pair with cream or pale sand-colored mats for an elegant, academic natural history presentation ideal for libraries, offices, or entomological displays.
