About the Item
Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – Adoration, Flight to Egypt & Christ’s Baptism (1735)
This refined set of three antique engravings, published in 1735, brings to life foundational events from the early life and ministry of Christ. Each scene is drawn from the Gospel of Matthew and executed in the copper engraving technique, showcasing the clarity and expressive detail characteristic of 18th-century devotional prints. The three plates—The Adoration of the Magi, The Flight into Egypt, and The Baptism of Christ—form a deeply symbolic visual sequence ideal for collectors of religious art or thematic framing as a triptych.
The first engraving, from Matthew Chapter I, is titled “The Wise Men of the East Worshipping our Saviour.” It depicts the Adoration of the Magi, with the Virgin Mary seated beside the Christ Child as the three kings approach in reverence. One kneels to offer a gift while others wait behind, bearing gold, frankincense, and myrrh. A powerful ray of divine light illuminates the scene through the architecture. The gestures, gifts, and solemn expressions express reverence and recognition of Christ’s divinity. This engraving is signed by E. Smith.
The second engraving, from Matthew Chapter II.14, portrays “Joseph and Mary Fly with Christ into Egypt.” In this nocturnal journey, Joseph leads the donkey carrying Mary and the infant Jesus, while an angel above them gestures the path forward. The landscape stretches with symbolic terrain: palm trees, winding roads, and a distant village nestled in the hills. The composition evokes both urgency and divine protection, offering a moving representation of exile and providence. This plate is also signed by E. Smith.
The third engraving, from Matthew Chapter III, shows “Christ Baptized” by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. Christ stands in prayerful humility in the water, while John, robed and barefoot, pours water over his head. Overhead, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove surrounded by radiant beams of light. Trees and rocks line the riverbank, grounding the spiritual event in nature. The engraving captures both divine revelation and human submission, marking the beginning of Christ’s public ministry. Signed by Rooker.
Condition summary: All three prints are in good condition. Moderate even toning throughout with some foxing, particularly in the upper margins. Faint water stains are visible on the top edges of the first and second sheets. No tears or repairs. Strong impressions with well-preserved lines and shading. Paper is stable and complete.
Framing tips: For elegant display, use matching gold, walnut, or dark wood frames with cream or soft ivory mounts. These narrative scenes work well as a set. UV-protective glass is recommended to protect the engravings and preserve their detail and tone.
