About the Item

Set of Three Dutch Naval Portraits – Tromp, Van Ghend, and Florisz, c.1700s A finely engraved set of three 18th-century portrait prints depicting prominent Dutch naval commanders from the 17th century, each presented in an oval frame with identifying inscriptions below. From left to right: 1. Kornelis Tromp – Count, Knight, Baronet, and Lieutenant-Admiral-General of Holland and West Friesland. Tromp (1629–1691) was one of the most celebrated admirals in Dutch history, known for his service during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and his leadership in battles such as Scheveningen and Kijkduin. 2. Willem Joseph van Ghend – Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland and West Friesland. Van Ghend served with distinction in the Dutch fleet, participating in major naval engagements of the mid-17th century. 3. Pieter Florisz – Vice-Admiral of Holland and West Friesland. Florisz (c.1600–1658) was an experienced commander who took part in significant operations during the First Anglo-Dutch War before his death in battle at the Battle of the Sound. Each portrait, engraved with meticulous attention to detail, shows the sitter in formal attire, often with armour and lace collars typical of the period, emphasising both their martial status and their high social rank. The engravings include the names of the engraver and draughtsman beneath each image, indicating their production for a larger illustrated naval history or biographical compendium of Dutch admirals. Condition report: Very good condition for age. Light toning to the paper, with crisp, clear impressions and strong contrasts. Framing tips: This horizontal arrangement works well in a wide frame with a neutral mat to unify the set. A black, dark walnut, or gilt moulding would suit the formal nature of the portraits. Technique: Copperplate engraving on laid paper Maker: Various engravers, after contemporary portraits; Dutch, c.1700s
