About the Item
Shag or Green Cormorant – Antique Bird Print by John Gould, c.1832
This striking antique bird print presents the Shag, also known as the Green Cormorant (Phalacrocorax aristotelis), as featured in John Gould’s renowned series Birds of Europe (1832–1837). The composition displays both adult and juvenile birds perched on a rocky shoreline, with the adult’s iridescent green-black plumage rendered in fine detail, capturing the signature crest and slender build of this coastal species.
John Gould, celebrated for his scientific precision and artistic flair, produced this lithograph as part of one of the most ambitious ornithological publications of the 19th century. His works are prized not only for their visual appeal but also for their role in documenting the avian biodiversity of Europe with unmatched beauty.
The Shag is a native seabird of European coastlines, often seen diving for fish in rough coastal waters. Gould’s rendering captures both its elegance and vitality, making this an excellent piece for collectors of antique natural history prints, coastal wildlife enthusiasts, or those curating a refined nautical or nature-inspired interior.
Condition report: Very good condition for its age. General toning consistent with age. Some minor marginal tears and small binding holes along the upper edge, all outside the image area. Image itself is crisp, detailed, and well preserved.
Framing tips: For a timeless presentation, use a dark wooden frame or black lacquer with a warm white or sage-green mat. The rich plumage of the bird pairs beautifully with darker accents, enhancing the visual drama of the piece.

John Gould
John Gould was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published several monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. Gould has been considered the father of bird study in Australia, and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.
