Silver-Washed Fritillary, Large Blue, Brown Hairstreak, Small Copper Butterflies

About the Item

"Butterfly Species: Silver-Washed Fritillary, Large Blue, Brown Hairstreak, Small Copper" This detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving features a collection of exquisite butterfly species. The silver-washed fritillary (*Argynnis paphia*) is shown in its vibrant male (Fig. 1A) and female (Fig. 1B) forms, accompanied by illustrations of its larva and pupa stages. The large blue (*Phengaris arion*), a near-threatened species, is depicted in striking detail (Fig. 2), showcasing its delicate blue wings. The brown hairstreak (*Thecla betulae*) (Fig. 3) displays its rich orange and brown hues, perched on a branch of birch leaves. Lastly, the small copper butterfly (*Lycaena phlaeas*) (Fig. 4) is elegantly presented, with its warm orange and black markings. These depictions are taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s renowned *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1805. Bertuch's work aimed to educate children and enthusiasts on the natural world, featuring over 1,200 meticulously crafted engravings covering various scientific subjects. This particular engraving emphasizes the diversity and life cycles of butterflies, combining art and science in a masterful way. Condition Report This engraving is in good condition with minor foxing and light toning typical of its age. The hand-coloring is remarkably vibrant, retaining its original charm. Framing Tip Select a natural wood frame or one with a soft pastel mat to complement the delicate tones of the butterflies. This engraving would be perfect for a nature-inspired setting or as part of a collection celebrating entomology.
