South Beveland Roman Catholic Dress with Girl and Grandfather, Plate XLII (1932)

About the Item

South Beveland Roman Catholic Dress with Girl and Grandfather, Plate XLII (1932) This vibrant lithograph from *The National Costumes of Holland* (1932) presents a rare and richly detailed view of the distinctive Roman Catholic costume worn in South Beveland, Zeeland. Depicted here are three generations of a family—grandfather, mother, and daughter—all clothed in the Sunday dress typical of the Roman Catholic villages in the southern part of the island. This community is described as prosperous and tradition-preserving, and their attire is a testament to both their faith and affluence. The woman stands at the center of the composition, knitting calmly with her hair drawn tightly under a white cotton under-cap and covered with a blue silk one. The elaborate outer lace cap, worn over a gold-beugelled headband, is striking in its breadth and complexity. Between the caps sit two large gold *stukken*, fastened with four pins—two plain and two filigree—marking her as part of a community that values ornate and historical headwear. Her low-cut bodice of black cashmere features tightly fitted short sleeves with black velvet bands, while the prominent *beuk*—a square cloth covering the chest and shoulders—is crafted of green silk embroidered with crimson flowers, trimmed with lace, and decorated with red beads and gold edging. The accompanying *doek* is similarly rich in color and folds, secured behind the head with an abundance of pins. Her black woolen skirt is voluminous and dense, paired with a wide, luxurious apron of soft black cashmere. The young girl mirrors her mother in every way: she wears a similar black cashmere bodice, a *beuk* in white cotton, and a red-and-white checked *doek*. Her blue-and-white striped apron and shorter skirt give her a youthful charm. Notably, her own cap replicates the adult style, complete with delicate lace and early adornments, though simplified to just three coral bead rows. Seated to the right is the grandfather—a rare portrayal of men in these plates. He wears a formal black broadcloth suit with a high white collar fastened by gold buttons, a double-breasted waistcoat, and a red silk tie patterned in shadowy white. His peaked cap, less commonly seen in this region, features a shiny black peak and scrollwork design. Even in repose, he maintains the community's commitment to traditional dress, with wooden clogs completing his ensemble. This illustration captures not only the intricacy of the costume but also the familial bond and cultural continuity that such dress represents. It is a poignant reminder of how fashion can reflect faith, heritage, and social identity across generations. --- Condition Note: The print is in very good condition with vibrant original coloring and strong impressions. Slight toning near the edges consistent with age. No tears or creases. Plate XLII marked in upper margin. --- Framing Suggestion: This plate would look beautiful in a classic black or walnut-stained wooden frame with a soft white or pale cream mat to echo the lace caps. For a more traditional finish, consider using gold fillet edging to complement the rich gold headwear and jewelry featured in the image.
