Depicted here are three generations of a family—grandfather, mother, and daughter—all clothed in the Sunday dress typical of the Roman Catholic villages in the southern part of the island. This community is described as prosperous and tradition-preserving, and their attire is a testament to both their faith and affluence. The woman stands at the center of the composition, knitting calmly with her hair drawn tightly under a white cotton under-cap and covered with a blue silk one. The elaborate outer lace cap, worn over a gold-beugelled headband, is striking in its breadth and complexity.
