About the Item

St. Paul to Corinthians Engraving – Paul Glories in Sufferings c.1735 Description: This dramatic antique engraving titled “The II Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians” depicts Paul defending his apostleship while glorifying his sufferings for Christ. Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving shows Paul seated, with a halo above his head, gesturing upwards towards a radiant vision in the sky. In the heavens is a glowing ear surrounded by a ring of cherubs and rays of divine light, symbolising God’s attentive listening to Paul’s prayers and his approval of Paul’s ministry despite hardships. Paul is depicted holding a long staff or sword, seated next to containers and baskets, possibly representing his life as a tentmaker and traveller, emphasising his humility and manual labour in service of the Gospel. The caption reads: “The Apostle vindicates himself from the Aspersions of his Enemies, & glories in his Sufferings,” reflecting the content of his second letter to the Corinthians where he defends his ministry and speaks of his trials and perseverance. This engraving was produced using the copper engraving technique, renowned for its precise lines and delicate shading, giving depth and clarity to each compositional element. Such prints were often engraved after designs by notable Bible illustrators like Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, though this particular plate remains unsigned. These theological engravings were integral to Protestant family Bibles, serving as visual sermons that combined doctrinal teaching with artistic narrative. Collectors value these prints for their historical, artistic, and devotional significance, offering insights into 18th-century Protestant theology and the use of emblematic illustrations to reinforce scripture readings within the household. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing mainly in the margins. There is a small paper loss to the lower right corner, not affecting the image. The plate impression remains strong, and the engraved details are crisp. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black frame with gold inner trim to enhance its classical and ecclesiastical appearance. Use a warm cream or ivory mount board to complement the aged paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the fine line work and prevent fading. This engraving will display beautifully in a study, library, or religious-themed gallery wall alongside other theological prints from the period, adding depth and contemplative beauty to any collection.
