About the Item

Title: St. Paul to Corinthians Engraving – Resurrection & Faith Proven c.1735 Description: This striking antique engraving titled “The First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians” illustrates Paul writing his letter while receiving divine inspiration about the certainty of resurrection and the steadfastness of faith. Produced around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving captures Paul seated at a grand writing desk with an ornate base, quill in hand, gazing upwards towards the heavens. Above Paul, within radiant beams of divine light, is a celestial vision of glorified souls among clouds, surrounded by angels and cherubs, representing the resurrection and the gathering of the faithful. To the left, a dove descends through the clouds, symbolising the Holy Spirit, guidance, and truth. The caption reads: “The Certainty of a Resurrection Proved, & Stedfastness in the Faith Recommended,” emphasising Paul’s theological argument in his first letter to the Corinthians regarding the resurrection of the dead and the importance of unwavering faith. Engraved with exceptional precision using the copper engraving technique, this print demonstrates the fine line work and delicate hatching that bring depth, light, and narrative clarity to biblical illustrations. While unsigned, it is stylistically consistent with the works engraved after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart for 18th-century English folio Bibles, where emblematic and narrative compositions were central to theological education and devotional life. Collectors value these prints for their religious, historical, and artistic significance. They served not only as illustrations but as visual sermons, reinforcing Protestant theological teachings within family worship settings. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning mainly in the margins. There is a small paper loss to the lower left corner, not affecting the plate image. The plate impression is strong with engraved details clear and sharp. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black moulding with a gold inner edge to enhance its classical ecclesiastical style. Use a warm cream or ivory mount board to complement the aged paper tones. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve its fine line work and prevent fading over time. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall dedicated to theological prints, offering depth and spiritual narrative to any collection.
