About the Item
St. Paul to Ephesians Engraving – Paul in Prison Writing Epistle c.1735
Description:
This finely detailed antique engraving titled “The Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians” depicts the Apostle Paul as a prisoner in Rome writing his epistle to the Ephesians to strengthen their faith. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving presents Paul seated on a bench with chains attached to his ankles, a halo above his head, and his right hand raised in teaching gesture. Opposite him sits a young scribe diligently writing down his dictated words on a tablet or scroll, capturing Paul's teachings for the early Christian community.
Above them in the heavens, a radiant Christ figure holding a cross and banner is depicted among the clouds, with rays of divine light shining down into the prison cell. Next to him are two hands holding a wreath encircling a dove, an emblem of the Holy Spirit, peace, and divine guidance. This visual symbolism emphasises Paul's divine inspiration and the central themes of faith, grace, and unity expressed in his letter to the Ephesians.
Engraved using the copperplate technique, known for its precise line work and intricate shading, this print displays exceptional craftsmanship typical of English Bible illustrations in the early 18th century. While unsigned, it follows the stylistic tradition of works after Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, which combined portraiture, narrative, and emblematic iconography to create rich theological teaching tools.
These prints were highly valued in Protestant households not only as illustrations but as visual sermons conveying moral lessons, biblical history, and doctrinal clarity.
Condition summary:
Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing mainly in the margins. The paper is stable with a small loss to the lower left margin corner, not affecting the plate image. The plate impression remains strong with fine engraved details well preserved.
Framing tips:
Frame this engraving with a dark wood or black moulding with gold lining for a classic ecclesiastical display. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to complement the paper tone and enhance the visual depth of the engraving. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the fine line work and prevent fading over time. This piece will display beautifully in a study, library, or within a gallery wall of religious or historical prints, offering both aesthetic beauty and deep theological meaning.
