About the Item
St. Paul to Philippians Engraving – Paul in Bonds Writing Epistle c.1735
Description:
This evocative antique engraving titled “The Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians” depicts the Apostle Paul imprisoned in Rome, writing his epistle of gratitude to the Philippians. Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, the engraving shows Paul seated on a stone bench, with chains attached to his ankles as a sign of his bondage. Despite his imprisonment, Paul appears composed and inspired, looking upwards towards the divine light emanating from heaven. Above him, within the radiant clouds, is a symbolic image of a hand pointing upwards alongside a cross, signifying faith and divine guidance.
Behind Paul, a young scribe or disciple sits writing his dictated words onto a scroll, ensuring the epistle reaches the Philippian congregation. The caption reads: “St. Paul being in Bonds at Rome writes an Epistle of Thanks to the Philippians for their Timely Assistance,” highlighting the context of this letter, which is filled with gratitude for their support during his hardships.
The engraving is executed in fine copperplate technique, known for its precision in line work and ability to depict delicate shading and symbolic details. Prints such as these were engraved after drawings by prominent Bible illustrators like Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, though this specific plate remains unsigned. These theological prints served not only as illustrations but as visual sermons within family Bibles, emphasising virtues such as faith, perseverance, and gratitude.
Collectors highly value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into 18th-century Protestant devotional life and biblical teaching.
Condition summary:
Good condition with minor age toning, slight foxing mainly in the margins, and a small tear at the left edge without loss to the image. The plate impression is strong with fine engraved details clearly visible.
Framing tips:
Frame this engraving with a black wood frame with gold inner trim for a classic ecclesiastical presentation. Use an ivory or cream mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is advised to preserve the fine details and prevent further paper oxidation. This print will display beautifully in a study, library, or religious art collection, paired with other biblical or allegorical engravings from the period.
