Vishnu is depicted in his Rama form, standing tall with a bow and a staff topped with a crescent moon, symbols of his warrior status and divine authority. Beside him stands Hanuman, the revered monkey god and loyal devotee of Rama, depicted with a monkey face and a raised hand in a gesture of reverence.
The detailed line work captures the intricate patterns of Rama’s attire, the texture of Hanuman’s fur, and the ornate jewelry, reflecting the mythological significance of Rama as the protagonist of the Hindu epic Ramayana.
The copperplate engraving was created by Jean-Baptiste Marie Poisson after an illustration by Pierre Sonnerat, a renowned French naturalist and explorer. It was published in Sonnerat’s influential travelogue, Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine (Dentu, Paris, 1806), which documented his observations of Eastern cultures during his travels.
The copperplate engraving technique, widely used in the early 19th century, allowed for the fine detailing seen in the deity’s elaborate garments and the expressive features of Hanuman.
