About the Item

Striped Thyme and Kidneywort Violet, hand-coloured botanical print, 1874 This finely detailed hand-coloured lithograph from 1874 features two distinctive alpine species: Thymus striatus (Striped Thyme) and Erepetion reniforme (Kidneywort Violet). It was published as part of the second series of Alpine Plants by George Bell & Sons in London, a celebrated Victorian botanical collection that combines botanical science with artistic elegance. At the top, Thymus striatus is shown in full bloom with its pale lavender-pink flowers and fine, needle-like foliage. A variety of wild thyme, it is native to dry alpine meadows and rocky outcrops, and is appreciated for its fragrance and resilience. The lithograph captures the upright flower heads and delicate structure with precision and charm. Below it, Erepetion reniforme, often referred to as Kidneywort Violet, is portrayed with violet-purple, nodding blossoms held aloft on slender stems, surrounded by round, kidney-shaped leaves. Its graceful, trailing form and woodland aesthetic make it an especially appealing subject in botanical illustration. The play between the soft flowers and rich green foliage is beautifully rendered with careful hand-colouring. Both illustrations reflect the Victorian fascination with alpine botany and the artistic pursuit of natural accuracy. Each plate in this publication was lithographed and individually coloured by hand, making every print unique. The artwork is set on thick, lightly aged paper with generous margins, ideal for framing. The colours are still fresh and crisp, especially in the contrasting tones of pink and violet against the subtle background. Whether for a collector of antique botanical prints or as a decorative feature in a natural or classical interior, this print offers a timeless celebration of alpine plant life. Condition summary and framing tips: Excellent condition with strong colours and only faint edge toning. Recommended for framing with a soft cream or light lavender mat and a mid-tone wood or pewter frame to complement the floral palette and preserve the antique feel.
