About the Item

Tomb of William the Silent – Nieuwe Kerk Delft – Dutch Architectural Engraving c.1750 This finely detailed antique engraving depicts the elaborate tomb monument of William the Silent (Willem van Oranje, 1533-1584) located in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft, the Netherlands. The engraving captures the grand Renaissance-style mausoleum surrounded by its ornate wrought-iron fence and surmounted by allegorical sculptures. Designed by Hendrick de Keyser and completed in 1623, the tomb features a recumbent effigy of William the Silent flanked by personifications of Liberty, Justice, Courage, and Religion. This architectural engraving shows the monument within the vast gothic interior of the Nieuwe Kerk, highlighting its towering columns, ribbed vaulted ceilings, and stained-glass windows. Several figures in 18th-century dress stand around the monument, offering a sense of scale and period context. The engraving is framed within a decorative border with beaded edge, typical of mid-18th-century Dutch prints. William the Silent, also known as the Father of the Dutch Nation, led the revolt against Spanish rule, establishing the independence of the United Provinces. His assassination in 1584 marked a pivotal event in Dutch history, and his tomb in Delft became a national monument symbolising Dutch freedom and resilience. Condition report: Good condition with minor age toning and occasional small foxing marks, mainly to the outer margins. Strong plate mark and fine lines throughout. Light creases to edges but not affecting the image. Framing tips: This engraving would look elegant framed in a simple black or dark walnut moulding with a cream or off-white mount to emphasise its architectural detail and historical gravitas. Suitable for a study, library, or collection focused on Dutch art, architectural prints, or European historical monuments.
