About the Item

Title: "Tropicbirds and Gulls: An 1849 Coastal Encounter" Description: This evocative print, titled "Tropicbirds and Gulls," is a detailed illustration from the "Book of Worlds," published in 1849 to document the natural and cultural diversity of the world. Likely created by an artist commissioned for the book, the artwork features two birds in a coastal setting, with waves crashing against rocks and a backdrop of a cloudy sky with distant birds in flight. The bird perched on the rock is a Red-billed Tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus), identifiable by its white plumage, black eye markings, red bill, and long, streaming tail feathers, often found in tropical oceans. The bird below is a Royal Tern (Thalasseus maximus), recognized by its black cap (typical in breeding season), white body, and black-tipped yellow bill, a common seabird along coastlines. The scene includes marine elements like starfish and shells, enhancing the coastal atmosphere. The print is particularly interesting for its early depiction of seabirds, reflecting the 19th-century fascination with natural history and exploration. In 1849, such illustrations were crucial for scientific study, serving as both educational tools and decorative art before photography became widespread. The "Book of Worlds" aimed to bring the wonders of nature to a broader audience, and this piece exemplifies that mission by showcasing two distinct seabirds in their natural habitat. The fine engraving techniques and subtle coloring capture the texture of the birds' feathers, the ruggedness of the rocks, and the movement of the ocean, creating a dynamic composition. This print appeals to collectors of historical wildlife art and provides insight into the early documentation of marine birds, making it a valuable piece for those interested in the history of ornithological illustration and coastal ecosystems. Condition Report: The print shows minor foxing on the edges with slight yellowing of the paper due to age. No tears or significant creases are present, and the colors remain vibrant. The mat board has light discoloration but is intact. Overall, the piece is in good condition for its age. Framing Tips: Use a pale blue or sandy beige mat board to reflect the coastal tones of the scene. A simple wooden frame in a driftwood gray finish would complement the 1849 seaside theme. Ensure acid-free materials to preserve the print's condition.

Antique Bird Print of Gulls on Rocky Coastline, 19th Century Seabirds
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique Bird Print of Gulls on Rocky Coastline, 19th Century Seabirds This elegant 19th-century ornithological print features two species of gulls—Larus canus (Common Gull) and Larus argentatus (Herring Gull)—depicted in their summer plumage. The scene captures the birds standing on a rocky shoreline at dusk, with soft pink and blue hues painting the sky and reflecting across the calm water. The carefully rendered plumage, from the delicate layering of feathers to the subtle contrast between white underparts and grey wings, showcases both scientific accuracy and artistic sensitivity. The print comes from a later 19th-century German ornithological series, likely associated with the tradition of detailed bird studies stemming from the influence of Johann Friedrich Naumann. Naumann, a pioneering German ornithologist, played a central role in establishing bird study in Central Europe and inspired a generation of artists and naturalists who continued his legacy through richly illustrated field guides. This particular plate was produced using chromolithography, a technique that allowed for brilliant, nuanced coloration by printing with multiple stones, each inked in a different shade. The result is a lifelike and richly textured portrayal, not only capturing the likeness of the birds but also evoking the natural environment they inhabit. Prints such as this one served a dual purpose: as important scientific documents for ornithologists and collectors, and as decorative items for the cultured 19th-century interior. The serene coastal setting and precise detail make this work ideal for lovers of seabirds, antique scientific illustration...

Biography: John Gould FRS (14 September 1804 – 3 February 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, "On the Origin of Species".
