About the Item
Twite – Fringilla Flavirostris – Antique Hand-Coloured Bird Print, 1809
A delicate and finely hand-coloured engraving of the twite (Linaria flavirostris), here given its Latin title Fringilla Flavirostris. The composition shows two views of the bird: one perched on a leafy twig, revealing its subtle brown and buff streaked plumage, and one in flight above, wings spread to display the darker flight feathers. The artist captures the twite’s characteristic winter yellow bill and soft, warm tones, providing both an aesthetic and scientifically accurate representation.
This plate originates from Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huisdouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven, published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829 by Cornelius Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn, and Jan Christiaan Sepp. This landmark ornithological work was the first comprehensive bird study in the Netherlands and is celebrated for its combination of detailed natural history observations and exquisite copperplate engravings coloured by hand.
The twite is a small finch of the family Fringillidae, closely related to the linnet but lacking the red head patch and breast. It is around 13–13.5 cm long, with streaked brown upperparts, a pink rump, and underparts ranging from buff to whitish. In Europe, including the Netherlands, the twite was a familiar bird of coastal areas, moorland edges, and open countryside during migration periods.
Collectors value this plate for its pleasing double-view composition and its place in a historically important series. It is suitable for framing alone or as part of a set of finch and songbird engravings from the Nederlandsche Vogelen series. The accompanying original Dutch text pages provide rich historical and scientific observations on the species, its behaviour, nesting habits, and physical characteristics, as understood in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Condition: Very good and clean. Strong impression with vibrant original hand colouring. Clean sheet with only minimal age-related toning at edges. Plate mark visible. Original descriptive text page has minimal age-related toning at the edges and two small holes in the margins.
Framing tips: A soft ivory or light beige mount will enhance the warm browns of the plumage. A slim gold or natural wood frame will complement its 18th-century elegance without overpowering the delicate detail.
