About the Item
View of the City of Canton (Guangzhou) with Foreign Factories, 1806
This finely detailed engraving, titled 'Vue de la Ville de Canton', presents a rare early 19th-century European view of the waterfront of Canton (modern-day Guangzhou), China. The scene captures the bustling port along the Pearl River, with large foreign merchant buildings (known as “factories” or “hongs”) lining the quay, each marked by tall flagpoles bearing the national flags of European trading nations—most prominently the flags of Denmark, Great Britain, and France.
In the foreground, a variety of Chinese sampans and junks float across the river, many with distinctive covered cabins, while a large building complex rises across the embankment. These Western-style buildings housed trade offices, storage spaces, and residences for representatives of European East India companies and private traders. The symmetrical, classical architecture reflects colonial influences while also highlighting the significant foreign presence in Canton during the Qing Dynasty.
Drawn by Pierre Sonnerat (1745–1814), a French naturalist and explorer, and engraved by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Poisson (1747–1820), the print was issued in the 1806 edition of *Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine*. This travel account offered one of the earliest illustrated French perspectives on Chinese coastal trade and cross-cultural exchange.
The engraving is historically important as it documents the limited zone in which foreigners were allowed to trade under the Canton System prior to the First Opium War (1839–1842). It offers a snapshot of a pivotal moment in global maritime commerce and Sino-European relations, and is highly collectible for those interested in early China trade, port city history, or architectural engraving.
