About the Item

View of the Piazza del Campo and Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, 14th Century This finely hand-colored print, labeled No.67, offers a masterful architectural rendering of the Piazza del Campo in Siena—one of Italy's most iconic civic spaces. Dominated by the elegant silhouette of the Palazzo Pubblico and its towering Torre del Mangia, this view captures the architectural grandeur and harmonious design of a public square that was, and remains, a symbol of medieval urban planning. The composition is notable for its geometric clarity and striking perspective, with the broad sweep of the Piazza drawing the eye to the radiant lines fanning outward from the base of the tower—lines that mimic the shell-shaped layout for which the square is famous. This radiating design, inlaid in stone in the real piazza, emphasized the gathering of the city's citizens around a central civic authority. To the right of the composition, the Palazzo Pubblico stands in crisp detail, its crenellated roofline and rhythmic Gothic windows echoed across the façade. This historic palace, built in the late 13th to early 14th century, was the seat of the Republic of Siena’s government and houses the celebrated fresco cycle 'The Allegory of Good and Bad Government' by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The tower, the Torre del Mangia, was constructed shortly afterward and remains one of the tallest secular towers in Italy, a symbol of civic pride that rivals church spires in height. The left and background portions of the print reveal the seamless integration of Siena’s medieval buildings, their warm terracotta hues unifying the cityscape. Tall, narrow towers—remnants of feudal aristocracy—punctuate the skyline, while the play of light and shadow along the arcaded lower levels gives depth and atmosphere to the quiet square. This architectural plate would appeal not only to those with an interest in Italian cityscapes and historical architecture, but also to collectors of Grand Tour prints or representations of civic Renaissance ideals. Condition: Very good condition. Light spotting in the margins, minor toning consistent with age. Color is rich, particularly in the sienna-toned brickwork and sky gradient. Plate mark visible, no tears or folds. Framing Tips: This print benefits from being framed alone, with a wide cream or ivory mat to emphasize its architectural perspective. Use a warm wood or antique gold frame to echo the historic character of the subject. Floating the print to reveal the plate mark adds value and elegance. Museum glass is recommended to prevent fading and protect the fine detail.
