About the Item

Title: Views of Port Jackson and Seal Hunters' Dwelling in New Holland Description: This lithograph, circa 1836, provides two engaging scenes from New South Wales and New Holland (modern-day Australia), capturing both the natural beauty and human activity of the region during Dumont d'Urville's expedition aboard the Astrolabe. The upper panel showcases the entrance to Port Jackson, drawn from the vantage point of the lighthouse. The dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation, and distant ships navigating the harbor highlight the rugged majesty of the coastline. A group of explorers is depicted in the foreground, observing the scenery and reinforcing the exploratory nature of the scene. The lower panel features the dwelling of seal hunters near Cape Western, surrounded by a wooded landscape. A modest hut stands as the central structure, with figures busily engaged in their daily activities. The foreground shows hunters processing their catch, while dogs roam the area, emphasizing the rustic and industrious life of early settlers and sealers. Created by Louis Auguste de Sainson, this lithograph was later reproduced in Brodtmann's *Entdeckungs, Reise der Franzosischen Corvette Astrolabe*. It offers an evocative glimpse into the landscapes and livelihoods of early 19th-century Australia. Condition Report: Marginal toning and light foxing, with minor handling wear. Both panels remain clear, with fine details and good contrast. Overall in very good condition.
