The scene captures two women operating an old-fashioned South Holland cheese press—an evocative moment that speaks to the rich domestic traditions of the region. Rendered with precision and vibrant colour, the print illustrates the distinctive transformation in costume style that accompanied the move from country to town life for peasant women in Walcheren. The costume seen here is a refined variation of the typical Walcheren peasant dress, adopted when women ceased rural labor and settled in towns like Middelburg or Veere. Compared to the more austere farmwear, the Middelburg-Ambacht dress reflects individual flair and town-influenced adaptations. One notable difference lies in the lace cap: the smaller farm-girl cap, usually donned upon reaching adulthood, is here replaced by the so-called *town cap*. This version includes a long, heavily starched frill—embroidered for everyday use and reserved in fine lace for Sabbaths and feast-days. The garments themselves are crafted of fine black cashmere, the aprons edged down the back with elegant silk braid. A variant working apron in blue and white is mentioned as more typical for laboring activities. The front of the costume is adorned with a full, pleated *beuk*—wider and more prominent than in other parts of Zeeland—and the decorative *doek* or *fichu* is also emphasized more strongly than in rural wear.
