About the Item

Walcheren Town Dress: Middelburg-Ambacht Women at a Cheese Press This beautifully detailed print from *The National Costumes of Holland* (1932) by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt showcases the dress worn by women of Middelburg-Ambacht, located in the province of Zeeland. The scene captures two women operating an old-fashioned South Holland cheese press—an evocative moment that speaks to the rich domestic traditions of the region. Rendered with precision and vibrant colour, the print illustrates the distinctive transformation in costume style that accompanied the move from country to town life for peasant women in Walcheren. The costume seen here is a refined variation of the typical Walcheren peasant dress, adopted when women ceased rural labor and settled in towns like Middelburg or Veere. Compared to the more austere farmwear, the Middelburg-Ambacht dress reflects individual flair and town-influenced adaptations. One notable difference lies in the lace cap: the smaller farm-girl cap, usually donned upon reaching adulthood, is here replaced by the so-called *town cap*. This version includes a long, heavily starched frill—embroidered for everyday use and reserved in fine lace for Sabbaths and feast-days. The garments themselves are crafted of fine black cashmere, the aprons edged down the back with elegant silk braid. A variant working apron in blue and white is mentioned as more typical for laboring activities. The front of the costume is adorned with a full, pleated *beuk*—wider and more prominent than in other parts of Zeeland—and the decorative *doek* or *fichu* is also emphasized more strongly than in rural wear. This suggests both modesty and a touch of urban vanity, as the townswomen embraced more elaborate jewellery and personal expression in their dress. Gold jewellery highlights the ensemble: a coral necklace, fine gold filigree pins, and possibly additional repoussé adornments tucked beneath the lace frill. The overall impression is one of subdued formality, where practicality and local identity merge into a quietly elegant presentation. This hand-colored lithograph is part of a rare edition limited to just 500 copies, printed for commercial release in 1932. It is a captivating collector’s item, ideal for framing. Condition: Very good condition with vibrant color retention. Minor toning at the outer edges consistent with age. No tears or creases. Unframed. Framing Suggestion: This piece would pair beautifully with a soft white mat and a black or dark wood frame to emphasize the fine lace detail and deepen the visual contrast of the attire. Consider a shadowbox or float mount to preserve the plate’s deckled edge, if present.
