About the Item

Western Marsh Harrier Nest – Antique Double-Page Engraving, Nozeman & Sepp 1770 This striking antique double-page hand-coloured engraving, titled Milvi Nidus, presents a detailed depiction of the nest of the Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), containing two white eggs carefully placed at its centre. The composition highlights the intricately woven structure of reeds and grasses, reflecting both the bird’s natural environment and its nesting behaviour in marshlands. Rendered across two folio pages with a central fold, the plate captures the impressive scale of the nest, making it an exceptional example of natural history illustration. The Western Marsh Harrier, known in Dutch as bruine kiekendief, is a large bird of prey inhabiting wetlands, reedbeds, and marshes across much of Europe, western Asia, and parts of Africa. The genus name Circus, derived from the Ancient Greek kirkos (“circle”), refers to the bird’s characteristic circling flight, while the specific epithet aeruginosus is Latin for “rusty,” in reference to its plumage tones. As one of Europe’s most recognisable raptors of wetlands, the species has long fascinated both naturalists and collectors. This engraving originates from Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huishouding, aert en eigenschappen beschreeven (Amsterdam, 1770–1829), the first comprehensive ornithological study of the Netherlands. Initiated by Cornelis Nozeman and continued by Martinus Houttuyn, with plates engraved and published by Christiaan Andreas Sepp and later his son Jan Christiaan Sepp, the work remains a cornerstone of European ornithology. It was the first series to depict all known Dutch birds life-like, often close to natural size, and with their associated habitats. Collectors particularly value this plate for its unusual focus on a nest rather than the bird itself, making it a rare and decorative addition to the series. The hand-colouring brings out the fine tonalities of the reeds and the soft eggs, adding depth and naturalistic appeal. Condition: Very good. Central vertical fold as issued, minor age-related toning, strong plate impression with fine hand-colouring. Darker area below "Milvi Nidus". Framing tips: This double-page engraving would benefit from a wide mount to balance the central fold and accentuate its size. A natural wood or dark oak frame will echo the earthy tones of the nest, while a subtle gilt liner could add a touch of refinement.
