About the Item
Antique Copper Engraving – Domestic and Wild Cats (Felis domestica, Felis sylvestris), 1660
This charming and historically significant 17th-century copper engraving presents two cats side by side for comparison — the domestic cat (Felis domestica, here titled “Zahme Katz”) and the wildcat (Felis sylvestris, “Wilde Katz”). On the left, the domestic cat sits calmly, gazing forward with an alert yet composed expression. On the right, the wildcat is depicted in an aggressive stance, fur bristling and mouth open in a hiss, capturing the essence of its untamed nature.
Rendered with fine linear detail, the engraving uses delicate cross-hatching to convey texture in the fur and subtle shading in the ground and background. The setting is minimal, ensuring the viewer’s focus remains on the anatomical differences and character of the two species.
The plate is marked “Tab. LXXII,” indicating that it comes from a larger natural history series or zoological compendium. Such works were popular in the mid-17th century, when European scientific inquiry and taxonomy were developing rapidly. This engraving likely originated in a German or Central European publication, as the captions are in both Latin and German.
Produced in 1660, this engraving is an early example of printed zoological illustration — valuable not only for its decorative qualities but also for its role in the history of natural history publishing. The survival of such prints in good condition is rare, making this a desirable collector’s piece.
