About the Item

Tomb of William the Silent in Delft Nieuwe Kerk – c.1840 Engraving Description: This elegant antique engraving depicts the monumental tomb of William the Silent, also known as William of Orange (1533-1584), located in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft, Netherlands. Rendered with meticulous architectural precision, the engraving shows the Renaissance-style mausoleum designed by Hendrick de Keyser, featuring its richly ornamented canopy supported by classical columns and crowned with allegorical statues. The recumbent marble effigy of William lies at the centre, guarded by four black marble obelisks at each corner, creating a sense of dignified grandeur. Completed between 1614 and 1623, the tomb is considered a masterpiece of Dutch funerary art, combining Renaissance symmetry with Mannerist sculptural flourishes. Atop the structure are personifications of Liberty and Victory holding a heraldic cartouche, while four bronze statues symbolise Religion, Justice, Courage, and Prudence, virtues associated with William’s leadership during the Eighty Years’ War against Spanish rule. This engraving was likely published around 1840 as part of an architectural or historical series documenting notable monuments of the Netherlands. The engraving’s perspective emphasises the soaring Gothic interior of the Nieuwe Kerk, with its clustered columns, pointed arches, and luminous stained-glass windows in the background, evoking the solemn grandeur of this historic royal burial site. Condition report: Good condition for age, with mild toning and occasional foxing in the wide margins and one small hole far outside the image. Strong plate impression with clear detail and rich shading. Framing tip: For display, consider a black or dark walnut frame with a wide off-white or light stone mount to highlight the architectural linearity and monochrome palette. Ideal for libraries, studies, and collections focused on Dutch history, architecture, or royal memorials.
